Press Release: Restord Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Support Innovative Biochar Project in Cornwall

Raising £30,000 with 50% Match-Funding from Cornwall Council

Cornwall, UK – 08/05/24 – Restord, a pioneering team dedicated to combating climate change through sustainable farming practices, is excited to announce the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to support their groundbreaking biochar project. With a target of raising £30,000, the project has already secured 50% match-funding from Cornwall Council, highlighting the significant potential of this initiative.

Addressing the Climate Challenge

The global community has committed to limiting the increase in temperature to 1.5°C or well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Despite efforts to transition to renewable energy and phase out fossil fuels, existing greenhouse gases remain a threat. Restord’s biochar project aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, contributing to climate mitigation efforts.

The Role of Agriculture in Climate Strategy

Agriculture is crucial to both the UK and Cornwall, with approximately 70% of Cornwall’s land being farmed. Farmers face challenges including degraded soils, changing subsidies, and an increasingly extreme climate. Restord believes that biochar can provide a transformative solution for these issues.

What is Biochar?

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance created through pyrolysis technology, converting wood residues into biochar, which can be up to 95% carbon. Biochar benefits soil by increasing water retention, enhancing nutrient capacity, promoting topsoil regeneration, and improving biodiversity. It can also reduce methane emissions when added to cattle feed.

Pilot Project in Cornwall

Restord is partnering with two local farmers to conduct on-farm biochar trials. These trials will explore the practical applications and benefits of biochar for the agricultural sector, aiming to answer critical questions about its usage and benefits while proving its efficacy in carbon removal.

Who We Are

Restord is a passionate team dedicated to producing biochar for its climate and agricultural benefits. For the last 80 years, our family has managed a 200-acre farm near Liskeard, Cornwall. Here, we plan to launch a pilot biochar facility to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of biochar.

Funding Requirements

We are seeking funds to purchase the pyrolysis technology needed to produce biochar on-farm. This project is in partnership with CapChar, a UK biochar company, which will supply the necessary technology and software infrastructure.
