New Podcast, “GROUNDED: A CLIMATE STARTUP JOURNEY”

After several years working behind desks at mission-driven startups in London, Tom Previte realised he had been talking a lot about saving the planet – but now he wanted to get his hands dirty.

That’s when he learned about biochar – a carbon-rich charcoal-like material that can be made from surplus biomass. Biochar, he discovered, may hold the key to storing millions of tonnes of carbon below our feet, improving our soil health and providing much-needed benefits for agriculture.

So, he returned to his roots at his family’s farm near Liskeard to explore whether he could work with local farmers to make a difference.

Grounded: A Climate Startup Journey captures the highs and lows of launching a green startup in the British countryside - from sharp learning curves to unlikely breakthroughs. Listeners will follow Tom as he digs deep into the realities and complexities of setting up a carbon removal project, and gets to grips with the science, the money, and everything it takes to build an environmentally (and financially) sustainable business.

Along the way he gets advice and support from other founders, farmers, scientists, policymakers, and family and friends. Upcoming voices include:

  • Councillor Martin Alvey, portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change at Cornwall Council

  • Richard Tamblin, Cornwall-based mixed farmer

  • Mick and Darren Jones, Welsh farmers and founders of Woodtek Biochar

  • Genevieve Hodgins, Project Manager at The Biochar Demonstrator

  • Alex Hume, Senior Associate at Finance Earth

  • Nikolaus Wohlgemuth, Carbon Markets Expert at Carbonfuture

  • Emily Swaddle, co-host of The Carbon Removal Show

The first season of Grounded: A Climate Startup Journey is available now on all major podcast players. Season 2 will be released in Autumn 2024.
